What is the Day of the Dead pet trend?

In Mexican tradition, a path of cempasúchil (marigold) petals guides souls back home during Día de Muertos. The trend dedicates that image to pets: a photo of a dog or cat who is gone walks along a bridge of orange flowers, captioned “es su primer Día de Muertos, no lo dejen solo”, “it’s their first Day of the Dead, don’t leave them alone.”

By popular belief, October 27 is the day pets return, which is why many families set up a pet ofrenda first. In 2025 thousands of people posted these videos with CapCut templates and AI images, and in 2026 the trend is already back on TikTok.

What to put on a pet ofrenda

  • Their favorite photo in the center, surrounded by marigolds.
  • Their bowl with kibble or a favorite treat, and a glass of water.
  • A toy, collar or leash.
  • Candles to light the way and colorful papel picado.
